Green Park StadiumSpread in an area of 1642.0000 sq. km, Kanpur ranks 9th on the “most populated cities in India” list. It also houses a huge industrial belt, wherein various manufacturing firms of leather and numerous textile mills are located, at the banks of the sacred Ganges River. Apart from the industrial front, Kanpur also boasts of its tourism side, which includes several shrines, monuments, zoos, parks and stadia. The city has a handful of beautiful places that have to be there on the itinerary of any tourist, such as Kanpur Memorial Church, Jajmau, Phool Bagh, etc.

The Green Park Stadium was constructed in 1945. It has a seating capacity of nearly 40,000 and is situated close to the river Ganga. It is the only stadium in the country that boasts of a ‘Students Gallery’. The stadium falls under the control and jurisdiction of Sports Department of Uttar Pradesh. This stadium was previously known as the ‘Modi Stadium’. The stadium also boasts of other unique thing i.e., the largest manually operated score board in the world. The stadium is named after Madam Green, who used to practice horse riding in the grounds during the British rule in 1940’s. The stadium has hosted many international cricket matches of Test and 1-day format. So far the Indian cricket team has proved to be most successful on this pitch. Past 1957, India has lost only two matches on the pitch. The pitch is considered highly lacklustre by the players. However, the pitch is considered to be a batsman’s heaven. The stadium has seen a series of centuries in the 21 matches that it has hosted.
The ends are known as the Mill Pavilion End and the Hostel End. These are named after the Elgin Mill and DAV College which are close to the stadium.The pitch at Green Park is known to be helpful for spinners and there have been some great performances by the veterans like Jasubhai Patel, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh and Subhash Gupte, etc.
Location and Accessibility
The Kanpur Airport is located at about 12.9 km and the Kanpur Central Railway station is at a distance of about 13.8 km from the stadium. There is ample local transport in the form of auto and cab for the stadium.
Best Time to Visit
Since almost all the stands in the stadium are open the best time to visit is from October to March.
