Synchronicity Rock Festival KanpurTwenty Five years is a long period for any rock music festival. This is precisely the time since Synchronicity, a flagship event of Antaragni, the annual cultural festival of Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur has been going. The three-day rock festival generates immense interest throughout the country and no less than 400 rock bands from across the country participate in the event. The event is generally held during the month of October.
Historical Perspective of Synchronicity
The event began as a rock band competition, way back in 1988 and has turned into the largest event of its kind in India over the years. International recognition came way for Synchronicity in 2007 when an international band by the name of 'Poets of the Fall' participated in the annual event.
Interestingly, Synchronicity has acted as a launching pad for some of India’s top rock bands. Parikrama, a leading Indian rock band made their debut at one of the Synchronicity events in early 1990s. The band gained international acclamation in later stages of its career and is one of the top rock bands of the country.
Critically acclaimed rock bands of international repute namely Weaponshop and Them Clones have participated in Synchronicity in 2010 leaving a lasting impression on minds of the participants.
The event can be treated as a rock festival of national magnitude as zonal preliminary rounds are held in five major cities of India. Only 2 of participating rock bands from each city get to make it to the semi finals. The second round of competition is held during the festival of Antaragni, which is a gala cultural event organized at Indian Institute of Technology.
Synchronicity is divided into three stages for better coordination to bring out the best of the talented lot from the participating rock bands.
Roadtrip or Zonal Stage Competition
To ensure comprehensive partnership from all across the country, participants from four zones namely Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore are selected for Synchronicity. Approximately 100 rock bands register in each of these zones. Of all the rock bands which register for the show only 12 are able to make it to the next stage.
Roadtrip shows are organized in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore and based on the performances three bands from each zone get selected for performing during Antaragni in Kanpur.
National Elimination Round
Fierce competition round takes place during the second stage and it is after two days of intense judging that four rock bands get selected for performing on the gala night of event before a crazy audience which mostly comprises students and some die hard rock lovers.
The Final Act
Becoming a winner in the Synchronicity event is a challenge and the best of the rock bands compete for the annual title. Top four bands from the country which get selected after methodical judging finally get to perform before the jury and fans. At stake is the Synchronicity winner title and a reward amount of Rs 5 lakhs.
International artistes of repute, judge the performance of the participating rock bands and decide on the winner. The event acts as a platform for budding rock bands and many of these have been able to gain critical acclaim at international levels too.
