Chakeri International Airport Kanpur
The airport of Kanpur is known as Chakeri Airport and is considered to be a very well structured and maintained International Airport since its inception in 1996. It is 11 km away from the center of the city. Regular flights are operated from here to many important cities and countries.
It’s capable of handling a good amount of human traffic. It has got all amenities like X-Ray baggage facility, excellent visitors lounge, shopping facility, snack bars, spacious car parking area, pre-paid taxi service etc. Buses and autos are also available from here to go to the city very easily.
This airport was first known as Aka Chakeri Air Force Station and belonged to Indian Air Force. The flights were operated to few places like Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Allahabad, Mumbai, Pune and Chennai from here since 1970. Hence, many people used to depend on the International Amausi Airport of Lucknow which was located in the close proximity of Kanpur.
However, to avoid such a situation and for a better connectivity, the Civil Air Terminal of Kanpur was reopened in 2004 and from then onwards regular flights were operational from here. Later the Airports Authority of India had planned for the expansion of Chakeri Civil Enclave. This was done, anticipating a large growth in human traffic over here.
The development of Chakeri Airport Kanpur was done in two phases. During the first phase the terminal building that was existing was expanded by building a visitors’ lounge and giving a new car parking facility. This is for managing and handling the human traffic. During the second phase, a fifty acre plot was added to the existing place to build the new civil air terminal.
Now the flights are not only operated regularly to many cities of India but also to various European, Asian, Gulf, African and American countries.
